Carbondale concert attracts thousands, closes US-51

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

Driving through Carbondale presented a particular challenge on Friday; a stage, country music, and several thousand people.

The Carbondale Music Coalition organized the event which closed the highway to traffic for a free country music concert.

Lydia Loveless opened around 7:00 Friday evening for Jason Isabel, who played until around 11:00.

Certain businesses in the area (affectionately known to Carbondale residents as ‘the Strip’,) observed extended hours to benefit from added business brought in from the crowd.

Volunteer Will Attig says the event is an attempt to bring big-city entertainment to the region.

“We want to go out, and support local businesses, we want to improve our town.” Attig explained, “and all it  takes is getting out, and volunteering and getting involved in stuff, so I think everybody should try to get out and do some volunteering for their city or community, wherever you live.”

The concert had no admission charge, excluding the VIP area.

All proceeds go to the Carbondale Music association which Attig says will fund future events.

Carbondale police say at least ten officers were assigned solely to oversee the concert.

As of Friday, no incidents were reported.
