CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

Just in time for Halloween, the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge will be hosting a nighttime bat program.

The event will be held Friday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.

Participants will learn about bat life history, current research at Crab Orchard as well as Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuges.

Those who attend will also learn about field survey methods and equipment.

Organizers say a presentation will be followed by a night hike to detect and identify bats and other nighttime creatures.

There will also be a children’s costume contest with prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.

If you plan to attend, you are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather and bring a flashlight, or headlamp.

On Saturday, Oct. 31 at 10 a.m. you could then join staff for a bat box building workshop and learn how to attract the insect-eating creatures to your own backyard.

Participants will build bat boxes to take home with them that day .

Space is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis for both events.

To reserve your spot or for more information, contact the Visitor Center at (618) 998-5933.
