Hundreds to search for jobs at SEMO career and internship fair

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

More than 500 students are expected to put their best foot forward at a career and internship fair on the campus of Southeast Missouri State Thursday.

The bi-annual event helps connect local and national employers who are looking to fill full-time positions and/or internships.

Career specialist Amy Aldridge says the career fair is an opportunity students don't get every day to initiate a face to face conversation with a future employer.

More than 100 companies are expected to meet with students about prospective jobs.

AT&T, for example, will be there to search for candidates that can fill the 60 openings at the call center in Cape Girardeau.

Other companies that will be in attendance include: Ameren, the FBI, and the Sikeston School District. Retail shops like the Buckle and Menards will also be on hand offering part-time opportunities as the companies gear up for the holiday shopping season.

Aldridge says this is the time to start looking for a job because it can take seven to eight months to land that first opportunity.

Some students have even walked away with a job after the career fair. However, Aldridge says you have to be prepared. Tips include:

  • Dressing the part. Taking a few extra steps to look professional can make a great first expression.
  • Bring your resume to show off your experience.
  • Have some questions ready to ask that employer, like about the work environment or training.

The career fair runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the student recreation center north.
