CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

The Carbondale, Illinois City Council is moving rapidly on their pledge to hire an interim city manager after city manager Kevin Baity resigned.

Carbondale Mayor Mike Henry said the city is moving as quickly as possible to move forward. The council meets on Wednesday at 7 p.m. and will go immediately into closed session.

“We are intent in getting this personnel business done and put behind us," Henry said. “The interim position is very important to us.”

Henry said the city may or may not take action at the meeting, but did say the council spent more than four hours in closed session on Tuesday, ending shortly after midnight, conducting interviews and reviewing applications for the interim position.

The mayor would not yet comment on how many candidates were interviewed because there may be more interviews on Wednesday.

“It’s going to be another closed meeting," Henry said.

The council may also interview more candidates and review applications at Wednesday's meeting.

Henry said other "personnel matters" will be discussed, but could not elaborate further.

If action is taken this evening, Mayor Henry said city representatives will hold a public press conference to answer questions on Thursday.

In the mean time, Baity, who was asked to resign after doing poorly on a performance review, is officially on a paid leave of absence, Henry said.

He said the city cannot simply remove Baity from payroll because he is still under contract, the city's legal team is reviewing that. His office was cleared out on October 2. Baity prepared a synopsis of current city project for whomever will take over.
