(KFVS) -

Students in school districts all over the Heartland are getting a little exercise before they even make it to class today. That's because October 7, 2015 is International Walk to School Day.

The global movement started in 1997 as a one day event celebrating safe routes to school.

Now, International Walk to School Day is a global event involving communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day.

Thousands of schools across America – from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico – participate every October.

Schools in southeast Missouri and southern Illinois are holding events before the school bell.

If you're a parent or student participating in International Walk to School Day, KFVS would love to hear from you. Snap a picture and send it to cnews@kfvs12.com, or go to the KFVS 12 Facebook page and leave a comment.
