POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -

A man was arrested after police say witnesses found him in a ditch in Poplar Bluff, Missouri on Oct. 1.

Chad Sweet, of Wappapello, was charged with possession of a controlled substance (heroin), DWI-drugs and other traffic offenses.

According to the Poplar Bluff Police Department, they were dispatched to the area of South 11th Street, south of Highway 53, for a report of a vehicle in a ditch with the driver unresponsive.

Police say witnesses told them they saw the vehicle in the ditch and stopped to help.

When they contacted the driver, later identified as 23-year-old Chad Sweet, they say his lips were blue and he was having difficulty breathing. Witnesses say he held a loaded syringe in his right hand.

As they waited for police, witnesses said Sweet regained consciousness. He allegedly squirted the contents of the syringe into the vehicle floorboard and dropped it beside the door.

When police arrived, they say Sweet was alert.

When asked, they say he identified the substance in the syringe as heroin.

Sweet was taken into custody and booked into the Butler County Jail.
