WEST FRANKFORT, IL (KFVS) -

A Southern Illinois college has started a community youth band open to students in grades 5 to 12.

The Morthland College Conservatory of Music and The Arts in West Frankfort is inviting students from the region already playing an instrument to participate.

Conservatory Director, April Burkhart, said she's excited to provide this opportunity to the region.

“I’ve been teaching children for over 25 years," Burkhart said. “It’s a blessing to be able to use my skills.”

The Creal Springs native spent that time teaching music at Wheaton College and Northwestern University in Chicago. Burkhart said she's happy to return to Southern Illinois to teach students who may not otherwise have the advantage.

West Frankfort High School disbanded its' band program in the 2014/2015 school year. School officials told Heartland News the cause was for a lack of budget.

Burkhart said every child should have the opportunity to experience music.

“To participate in music, to appreciate music, to enjoy it and produce it; make it themselves," Burkhart said. "It will be fun to see how this all unfolds.”

The cost is $57 per semester and the first band meeting is at 7 p.m to 8:30 p.m. October 5 at 401 Main Street in West Frankfort.
