Mississippi man killed in tree-cutting incident in McCracken Co.

A Mississippi man was killed Thursday in a tree-cutting incident in rural McCracken County.

McCracken County emergency responders received a call at 5:08 p.m. Thursday to respond to a rural and remote area of Western McCracken County northwest of the Ragland area.

Officials say it was reported that a man was barely breathing after being struck by a tree.

Emergency crews had to hike several hundred yards through a densely wooded area with freshly cut trees to get to the victim.

Responders gave aid and attempted several life saving measures, all of which were unsuccessful.

An investigation determined that the victim, along with other workers, were cutting down a large area of trees towards the Ohio River for a construction project.

Once one of the large trees were cut and fell to the ground, the trunk of the tree was still attached to the stump, which was still a few feet up from the ground, under pressure.

The trunk portion of the tree then came loose, and thrusted off of the stump, striking the victim.

The victim has been identified as Brandon J. Mitchell, 29, of Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Mitchell was employed by Sheehan Pipeline Company who was subcontracting the work for Trunkline Gas Co.

The McCracken County Sheriff’s Department and Coroners Office are conducting the investigation.
