Fall color is starting to flood the Heartland, but a sunny sea of yellow is stopping traffic in southwest Missouri.

"They’re beautiful and its really cool they planted them out here they said it’s the first year they've done this," says Juanita Jackson, who lives nearby.

A farmer in Willard, just outside of Springfield, Missouri planted a field of sunflowers on his farm along U.S. Highway 160 for the first time, and it's dazzling people near and far.

Much of that popularity is thanks to social media.

Many are stopping on the side of the road to enjoy the sight, and taking pictures they then post to Facebook.

“The town has been quite surprised at the draw it has had,” says Mike McQuerter who moderates the ‘Our Little Town, Willard Missouri’ Facebook page. “The owners are Ronnie and Mary Ellen Crighton and have been very gracious to allow everyone to come by and visit and shoot photos.”

"I think its become quite the attraction and it’s a blessing,” says Erica Hawkins who stopped by to get an up close look at the sunflower field. “Kids get to walk through and experience something so beautiful in nature god gave us to enjoy."

The sunflowers will be harvested for bird seed in late December.

You can see them for yourself if you want to take a drive this weekend.

Willard is about a 4 ½ hour drive from Cape Girardeau.
