CARTERVILLE, IL (KFVS) -

Leaders of several southern Illinois colleges were called to John A. Logan College to explain their financial situations at a state Senate hearing on higher education on Thursday, Oct. 1.

The state’s budget stalemate is becoming ever more pressing on the schools leaders said. If it continues, thousands of Illinois college students could face dipping into their own pockets or being forced from school.

“If it wasn’t for financial aid I wouldn’t be able to do this," William Hutchcraft said, a 41-year-old JALC student. "I never thought I’d be able to come back to school and learn as much as I have and experience what I have here.”

Public colleges and universities across the state have been fronting grants the state agreed to pay but is holding so students could return to school this fall.

School leaders said if the state doesn't pay out, students will need to come up with the cash.
