October 1 is National Black Dog Day.

It's a special day devoted to highlighting the plight of black dogs in shelters around the country.

These pooches in the Heartland are celebrating #BlackDogDay. Mobile users click here to take a look at a slideshow of adorable canines.

Black animals are the least adoptable pets in shelters because of their color.

Black dogs can be overlooked because of many different stigmas. Some believe the color black is evil. Black dogs do not show up as well in photographs.

Black dogs could look scary and intimidating because you cannot see their facial expressions as easily.

Black dogs can be easily overlooked by people searching for a new dog.

They are the first to be euthanized in overcrowded conditions.
