Carbondale city manager stepping down after poor performance review

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

Carbondale's city manager is stepping down from his position.

The City Council of the City of Carbondale has agreed with City Manager Kevin Baity that he will step down from his position effective October 1.

In a news conference Thursday afternoon, Carbondale's Mayor John "Mike" Henry said that the city saw little to no improvement in certain areas on a performance review and felt it was best to separate from Baity.

He would not elaborate exactly what the city council was unhappy with.

"It came down to its just not a good fit," Mayor Henry said.

Henry says the city is in a rush to find a new city manager and that the search for a new hire begins immediately. He says they are looking for someone with zeal and a "strong, strong leader."

He says consultants have advised that it may take six months to find a new city manager.

"It was difficult for me personally, because I'm friends with Mr. Baity," Henry said. "But we run this city like a business and that's what we're going to do."

Baity is on a paid leave of absence until they can work out the terms of the separation.

This was a mutual decision and both parties are eager to move forward, according to the City of Carbondale.

No city services should be affected, according to the city.
