CARTERVILLE, IL (KFVS) -

The problems that come with the state budget impasse will be center stage today at John A. Logan College in Carterville, Illinois.

The State Senate Higher Education Committee will hold a hearing at JALC to find out how the budget impasse in Springfield is impacting high education in southern Illinois.

While recent court rulings and administrative actions by Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner have kept many programs running despite the lack of a state budget, state money for higher education is still up in the air.

Illinois colleges and universities traditionally receive almost $2 billion in funding from the state.

Right now, because state money is frozen, many institutions are subsidizing state grants and programs, like MAP grants and the Grow Your Own Teachers Program, to help students who normally rely on state help to pay for tuition and fees

State Senator Pat McGuire (D-Joliet) chairs the Senate Committee, and will join other State Senators along with representatives from community colleges through out southern Illinois, SIUC, students and parents at the hearing.

The hearing is at 10:00 a.m. in the Batteau Room at JALC.
