BENTON, IL (KFVS) -

Benton police were called to investigate a report of criminal damage to property on Monday, but officers ended up covering a much bigger case.

Alexander D. Maynor, 22, of Benton, was in jail on Tuesday on charges of domestic battery and animal cruelty.

According to police, the battery charge comes from hitting his live-in girlfriend. The animal cruelty charge reportedly comes from striking the family dog with a machete at least twice, police said.

The dog suffered major injuries.

Benton police said the incident took place at a home in the 1200 block of North Main Street.

According to Veterinarian Clark Rogers' office, the dog later died.
