School district searching for volunteers to have lunch with students

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -

Poplar Bluff School District counselors are asking for volunteers to come have lunch with their students.

District leaders say the program will allow for influential people in the community to come and talk to students, plus the meal is free.

There is a process before anyone is allowed to have lunch with students, including a background check screening for sex offenders and child abuse neglect.

Jim Ward has been doing the buddy system for the last eight years.

He followed a child's progress from fifth grade to enrolling in college and encourages everyone in the community to join.

“It’s a half hour a week and it changes a guy’s life forever," he said. "It’s an investment that we think is so minimal, but for them it is a huge benefit.”

Counselors say the program will be targeted to kindergarten, fifth and sixth graders.

If you're interested in this buddy system, you are asked to contact:

  • Kindergarten - (573) 785-4905
  • 5th & 6th Grade - (573) 785-5566
