Body of missing boater in Diversion Channel identified

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, MO (KFVS) -

Search crews found the body of a missing boater in the Diversion Channel Monday afternoon, Sept. 28.

Cape Girardeau Coroner John Clifton identified the boater as 57-year-old Brian Ourth, of Chaffee, Mo.

The body was found just after 3 p.m. about 30 yards from the Headwater Access ramp on the Diversion Channel in Cape Girardeau County.

According to Lt. David James with the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department, they received a 911 call from witnesses at around 12:30 p.m.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports Ourth was operating a trolling motor on the bow of a boat when be fell overboard into the water.

Ourth struggled to stay above water, submerged and did not resurface.

The highway patrol reports the boat Ourth was using was still in gear and floated away from the original location.

Witnesses on the bank and said they heard a splash and then saw a boat circling the water. The witnesses say they thought they saw a head bobbing up and down in the water.

Crews with Scott City, Cape Girardeau fire, highway patrol and the sheriff's department responded to the scene.

This is the second boating fatality for the Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop E in 2015.
