Teams play wiffle ball for St. Jude's

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Nine teams played their hearts out in a wiffle ball tournament aimed to help out children.

The 19th Annual Wiffle Ball World Series kicked off this weekend in Cape Girardeau. The games were played in what is called Sherwood Yards. Sherwood Yards is actually in the backyard of a home.

It started decades ago. A backyard was turned into a wiffle ball stadium with foul poles, a diamond, nets, etc. The goal is to have fun all while collecting funds to give to St. Jude Children's Hospital.

While teams play to win and for bragging rights, they are all here for helping out the children at St. Jude's.

"A lot of us have kids now and we're blessed that they're healthy," Jeff Augustine said. "If we can do a little wiffle ball tournament like this in my parents back yard and we can raise some money for St. Jude's to help out kids that aren't as fortunate as
ours then we think it's a great thing."

Players and fans helped raise more than $1,000 for St. Jude's.
