Netflix study tracks when fandom begins

(KFVS) -

It took Walter White nearly a full season to become the ominous drug dealer Heisenberg in the TV series "Breaking Bad," but a study by Netflix found fans were hooked long before White's criminal turn.

The television streaming service analyzed data from the premiere seasons of some of today's most popular shows to find out which episodes grabbed the viewer and never let go.

You've probably heard someone you know say "I was hooked from the beginning," but Netflix's study reveals a shows pilot episode isn't the defining moment of fandom.

"Given the precious nature of primetime slots on traditional TV, a series pilot is arguably the most important point in the life of the show," Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer for Netflix, said "However, in our research... we found that no one was ever hooked on the pilot. This gives us confidence that giving our members all episodes at once is more aligned with how fans are made."

To conduct the study, Netflix researched accounts from 16 counties to analyze viewing habits.

The data collected reveals which episodes of the shows in the study kept viewers coming back for more.

  • "Bates Motel" - 2 episodes
  • "Better Call Saul" - 4 episodes
  • "Breaking Bad" - 2 episodes
  • "Daredevil" - 5 episodes
  • "Dexter" - 3 episodes
  • "Grace and Frankie" - 4 episodes
  • "House of Cards" - 3 episodes
  • "How I Met Your Mother" - 8 episodes
  • "Mad Men" - 6 episodes
  • "Orange is the New Black" - 3 episodes
  • "Pretty Little Liars" - 4 episodes
  • "Blacklist" - 6 episodes
  • "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" - 4 episodes

Netflix said 70 percent of viewers who watched the episodes listed above went on to finish watching the entire season.

The study did not find the exact moment within each episode that propelled viewers to finish out the season.
