Three Rivers, Sikeston DPS trade training for firetruck

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -

A deal between Three Rivers Community College and Sikeston Department of Public Safety is a win-win. DPS gave the college a retired firetruck in return for free training classes from Three Rivers.

The fire training program used to use a '60s model fire truck. The new one is a '90s model automatic and has more up-to-date features.

Leaders of the fire and law enforcement programs say not only is the truck a huge asset for student learning, but it's also a great example of the community helping the community.

"We will be able to do driver training with it. Of course, it will pump better. It's just a step up by about several degrees over what we had,” fire training coordinator Jack Armor said.

“We support the communities. The communities in turn support us. We provide them with qualified, highly trained individuals to go back into the community and be prosperous members of society,” Director of Public Safety Chuck Stratton said.

Both the fire and law enforcement programs are growing at the college. Armor said, through its partners, the college's has trained 1,300 firefighters statewide.
