6 injured in 2-vehicle crash on I-64 in White Co., IL

WHITE COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

Six people were injured after a crash on Interstate 64 westbound near mile post 126 in White County, Illinois on Thursday morning, Sept. 24.

According to the preliminary investigation by Illinois State Police, a 2005 Kenworth semi, driven by Raymond G. Nelson, 70, of Alvarado, Minnesota, was going westbound on I-64 when he began to merge into the passing lane.

At the same time, police say a 17-year-old was driving a 2002 Dodge Durango westbound in the passing lane, alongside the semi.

As the semi began to merge into the passing lane, police say the teen tried to avoid being hit by driving into the center median. The Durango then rolled onto its top, before skidding back onto the road and hit the semi.

Police say Nelson did not report any injuries. He was cited for improper lane usage.

The 17-year-old and five passengers in the Durango were taken by ambulances to an area hospital. The passengers included: 33-year-old Jelkelah A. Johnson, of Owensboro, Ky.; a 10 year old of Owensboro; an 11 year old of Owensboro; a 12 year old of Owensboro and a 16 year old of Owensboro.

The teen was cited for failure to secure a child in an approved child restraint system or seat belt.
