JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

A man was arrested in Jefferson County on Thursday after he allegedly attacked a woman and threatened her with a gun.

Officials in Jefferson County responded to an area near the abandoned Dix Lumber yard around 11:45 a.m. after they heard what sounded like a woman screaming that she was being raped.

A car the sheriff's department identified as the victim's was on scene until roughly 8:00 p.m.

Two residents who live on the same street say they have seen the car in the area before, while the owner fed stray cats near the lumberyard.

Officials were told by the woman that a man had attacked her and threatened her with a gun, but the man had run away.

“A Sheriff's deputy told us that we needed to go into lock-down immediately." explained Rome School Superintendent Erik Estill, "We had no idea what it was for... all we knew was that there was something going on nearby.”

The staff at Rome grade school say they were given the all-clear at about 1:30 p.m., but it was a frightening day.

The Sheriff's office says deputies, detectives, Mount Vernon police and Illinois State Police were able to apprehend a male suspect.

Officials say the man fought with deputies but was successfully taken into custody at the Jefferson County Justice Center.

As of Thursday at 9:00 p.m. no names or charges had been filed.
