SALEM, IL (KFVS) -

Fire destroyed the old Brown Shoe factory in Salem, Illinois late Wednesday. Flames also threatened a nearby home.

Firefighters got the 911 call around 10 p.m. September 23rd to the building at West Main and College Street.

When crews arrived on the scene, flames had already engulfed the building, and spread to a nearby home on South Pearl Street.

WRXX-FM reports that once it was determined that the old factory building was a loss, firefighters concentrated on saving the home and keeping the fire from spreading further.

Ameren Illinois crews cut power to the area, affecting more than 1,400 customers on the north and west sides of Salem at one point.

By 6:00 a.m. all but 167 customers had their electricity restored.

The State Deputy Fire Marshall responded to the scene to help determine the cause of the blaze.
