Heartland priest makes visit to see the pope

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

The pope’s visit has thousands of people from across the nation coming to see him and one Heartland priest will be one of them.

Rev. Bob Flannery, the priest at St. Francis Church in Carbondale has officially packed his bags and is making his way to the nation’s capitol.

Rev. Flannery has been the priest at St. Francis for the past 17 years.

He said he wasn’t sure whether or not he’d be able to get to see Pope Francis, but Congressman Mike Bost had offered him an extra ticket.

Rev. Flannery said this will be the fourth pope he’s seen in person and is very excited to go.

“It’s going to be wonderful," Rev. Flannery said. "And part of it is just being with the whole crowd of people’s excitement and appreciation and love for him and that’s contagious and hopefully I’ll be able to share that cotangent with my parishioners here and others in the area.”

Rev. Flannery will be joining 10 other priests from his dioses and their bishop.

He will be gathering at the West Lawn of the Capitol on Thursday morning.
