Mt. Vernon man facing arson charges in June investigation

MOUNT VERNON, IL (KFVS) -

A man is facing additional charges in connection with an arson investigation from June.

Steven Murphy, is facing aggravated arson and residential arson. A previous charge of obstructing justice was dismissed.

On June 28, the Mt. Vernon Fire Department responded to a house fire at 301 Harrison. A resident, Tamara Malin, was found dead inside the home.

On July 1, Mt. Vernon police arrested 26-year-old Murphy on a charge of obstructing justice for providing false information related to the investigation. Murphy was taken to the Jefferson County Justice Center on a $50,000 bond.

On July 8, Mt. Vernon police arrested 25-year-old Lindsey Payne-Favors, of Murphysboro, for obstructing justice for providing false information related to  the investigation. Payne-Favors was taken to the Jefferson County Justice Center on a $25,000 bond. Police say she was released after posting the bond in cash.

Murphy was charged with aggravated arson and residential arson on Tuesday, Sept. 22. He remains in the Jefferson County Justice Center on the arson-related charges with a bond of $250,000.

According to police, additional charges from this investigation are under review by the Jefferson County State's Attorney's Office.
