Carbondale leaders meet to discuss game plan to win America's Best Communities contest

Economic development authorities in Carbondale met to discuss a game plan as the town vies for top honors as one of America’s Best Communities.

The 2015 Forward to the Future summit was held at the Carbondale Civic Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The town made the cut and is now a quarterfinalist among 50 communities narrowed down from 400 initial applicants in the national competition sponsored by Frontier Communications and DISH network.

The aim of the contest is to stimulate growth and revitalization in small cities and towns across a 27-state area.

The America’s Best Communities website states the contest will help three winning communities address the need for growth by identifying and investing in innovative ideas that small cities and towns can use to build and sustain their local economies.

Carbondale is up against 49 other quarterfinalist communities. The list will be narrowed down to eight and finally down to three in April 2017.

As a quarterfinalist, Carbondale will receive $35,000 to develop a plan and a GoPro camera to document the process.
