Niece of shooter in KY trooper death to be sentenced

LYON COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -

The niece of the man who allegedly shot and killed Kentucky State Trooper Cameron Ponder will appear in court on Monday, March 7.

According to the Lyon County Circuit Clerk, Ambrea Shanks was indicted on Sept. 22 for hindering prosecution.

A that time, Shanks was was also arraigned in the Lyon County Circuit Court.

Shanks will appear before a judge for a sentencing hearing.

Shanks is the niece of the suspected shooter, Joseph Thomas Johnson-Shanks.

On Sunday, Sept. 13, Trooper Ponder pulled a vehicle over for speeding. After a police chase, Ponder was shot and later died from his injuries.

Inside that car was Johnson-Shanks, Ambrea Shanks and three other passengers. 

Johnson-Shanks was the driver and suspected shooter. He was shot by a special response team on Monday, Sept. 14 after a manhunt. He later died at an area hospital.
