Prosecuting attorney proposes adding tier system to sex offender list

According to Homefacts, there are 124 registered sex offenders in Stoddard County, that's about 41 offenders per 10,000 people in the county.

Stoddard County Prosecuting Attorney Russell Oliver said there's got to be a better way to inform residents about the sex offenders living in their hometowns.

"A tier system will help give more information about if we're dealing with a predatory sexual offender," he said.

Oliver's tier system would put the highest offenders at Tier 1, moderate offenders in Tier 2 and the least violent offenders, often older teenagers or young adults, at Tier 3.

"I think people are brought into a false sense of security that maybe that sex offender isn't that bad, but if we have a tier system and if there's a tier one person living next to you, you know what you're dealing with," Oliver said.

Tonya Wethington is a grandmother and said she supports Oliver's idea.

"It's an excellent idea to establish something like that in this area, especially if you have children growing up and wants to know who your next door neighbor is," she said.

Wethington said having this system will bring a lot to the community.

"You can get on that list without doing nothing wrong at all and then there the more dangerous sex offenders that has done something really bad," Wethington said. "So that Tier 1,2 and 3 would be an excellent program if we can get that established here."

Oliver said the registry list is effective as it is now, but want to make sure it's gets better over time.

"The registry does a great job of putting people on notice, we can always do better and this is a way of improving on what we already have," Oliver said.
