Health officials recommend flu vaccine before virus hits

CDC reports of the flu vaccine showed it was only 18 percent effective last flu season, however the Franklin-Williamson Bi-County Health Department is encouraging people to get the vaccine this year.

Health officials at the Franklin-Williamson Bi-County Health Department say each year, the CDC studies the strains that are out and predict what will be the best vaccine for the present year.

Although last year showed the vaccine to be less than 20 percent effective, they say the best protection from the flu is the flu vaccine.

“While it's not 100 percent protection," health educator, Adrienne Bramlett said. "You may get a mild case of the flu, a mild reaction, if you’ve come into contact with some of the viruses – but the illnesses in the virus is not going to be as severe.”

Health officials say the flu vaccine is recommended for anyone who is older than 6 months old, and highly recommended for who have chronic health conditions.

There are different types of flu vaccines.

"I recommend you ask your provider who will be giving you the vaccine, what type it is, what it protects against and what would be best for you," Bramlett said.
