The woman charged in connection with the shooting death of a Kentucky State Trooper appeared in court for her arraignment on Thursday, Sept. 17.

Ambrea Shanks, 18, was appointed a public defender.

Her preliminary hearing was set for 10 a.m. on Sept. 23.

If a judge finds enough evidence of guilt, the case will move to a grand jury.

Shanks is the niece of the suspected shooter, Joseph Thomas Johnson-Shanks. She was charged with first degree hindering prosecution or apprehension.

On Sunday night, Sept. 13, Kentucky State Trooper Cameron Ponder pulled a vehicle over for speeding. Ponder was shot and killed after a police chase.

The driver and suspected shooter, Johnson-Shanks, was shot by a special response team on Monday morning after a manhunt. He later died at an area hospital.

Ambrea Shanks was one of four passengers in the vehicle.
