New sidewalks aim to help children walk safely to Cape Girardeau school

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Work begins this week to build new sidewalks within the Alma Schrader School District, designed to give children a safer walk to school.

The project is being funded through the federal Safe Routes to School Program.

Crews will start on the east side of Kingsway Drive and proceed north to Kurre Lane.

Drivers may experience delays during construction and are urged to avoid using this area of Kingsway if possible.

The project is expected to take 4 months to complete, without weather delays.

Work will also begin in the coming weeks on sidewalks for the west side of Kingsway, south from Janet Drive to the Food Giant.

This section will be funded by the Transportation Trust Fund 4, a sales tax approved by Cape Girardeau voters in 2010.
