Barge brushes against pier on Cumberland River 'Blue' Bridge

LAKE CITY, KY (KFVS) -

A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet bridge inspector was sent to the US 62 Cumberland River “Blue” Bridge at Lake City, after it was reported that a harbor tug brushed up against a pier on the bridge.

The tug reported no damage to any of the barges, and only a scrape on the bridge pier.

The pilot of the boat said he was northbound out of the Lock at Barkley Dam when his tow of 5 loaded sand barges and 4 loaded rock barges made contact with a pier on the bridge.

Due to the minor nature of the incident, the Coast Guard did not order the bridge closed to highway traffic.

The USCG Regional Operations Center at Louisville asked for a certified bridge inspector to run a safety check on the structure.

Motorists should use caution and be alert for the inspector working along the curb and bridge railing.

The inspection should take about an hour to complete.

If the inspector gives an all clear there will be no interruption of highway traffic at the site.
