EAST CAPE GIRARDEAU, IL (KFVS) -

A man arrested in connection with a shooting investigation in East Cape Girardeau is facing charges for attempted murder.

According to Illinois State Police, 29-year-old Merced Martinez was arrested in Cape Girardeau on Saturday, Sept. 19, after a man was found with multiple gunshot wounds near Illinois Route 146.

The Cape Girardeau Police Department reports they picked Martinez up at an address on Highway 74 at 4:59 a.m.

Zach Gowin, the Alexander County State's Attorney, charged Martinez with attempted murder.

According to Cape Girardeau County officials, deputies from Alexander County picked up Martinez from the Cape Girardeau County jail on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 9:30 a.m.

Illinois State Police had been looking for a truck and persons of interest connected to the Sept. 13 shooting.

ISP was called in to assist the Alexander County Sheriff’s Department with the shooting on Sunday evening.

According to a report, four Hispanic males got into an argument with another man at approximately 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of Illinois Route 146 and Brookwood Drive in East Cape Girardeau.

Two people say they heard what sounded like gunshots.

They then say they saw a man running from Babe's Fish Wagon toward a mobile home and then collapse.

The man had a towel to his bleeding stomach.

Neighbors say they called 911 and the Alexander County Sheriff's Department arrived shortly later.

The victim had indeed been shot multiple times and was taken to an area hospital, where he is expected to survive his injuries.

The suspects were last seen going westbound over the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge Bridge in a two-tone burgundy over lighter color, newer model Ford crew cab pick-up truck.

The truck is described as having shiny rims and a ladder rack in the bed.
