Third annual 'Run to Remember 9-11' held in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

Some rain didn’t stop more than 100 people in Carbondale from showing their support on Patriot Day.

The crowd stood by in the rain for a short ceremony around 6:00 p.m. on Friday.

The ceremony started and ended in close synchronization with the rainfall, as attendees stood huddled under a few umbrellas and four-post tents.

Organizers say a graduate student at SIU put the wheels in motion three years ago, after military supporters on campus voiced interest in holding a regular event for Patriot Day.

The event is also held in honor of police, fire, and other first responders across the country.

“There are people today in dangerous places, or firehouses, ambulance bays, or police departments that are sitting and waiting for an opportunity to turn themselves into dangerous places to help us.” Explained Paul Copeland; who helped organize the event this year.

More than $3,000 from this year’s event will go to the Carbondale Chapter of ‘This Able Veteran’, who will use the money to train therapy dogs to comfort combat veterans.

22 military veterans take their own lives every day.
