City leaders hopeful to host more sporting events

The City of Cape Girardeau, Mo. wants to be *the place* to host big sporting events.

From events like the USGA Women's Tournament to the American Junior Golf Association, Cape is hosting some big events and leaders want to keep it that way.

These events are bringing in tons of people, but one thing holding the city back from getting even bigger events may be places to stay.

The USGA currently has a majority of the hotels booked for its tournament this weekend, and had to move overflow to cities like Perryville and Sikeston.

John Mehner, president of the chamber of commerce, says the plan is to keep growing so that Cape can stay a top contender.

“We have a great hotel community here," Mehner said. "They're always looking at how they can upgrade and add to inventory and they’re doing that right now. We got a new Hampton ready to come online and others ready to replace or upgrade their facilities, that’s big.

Mehner says adding the new sports complex could add attraction to the city for future tournaments.

"Recently, of course, we talked about the new sports complex to be built in cape," he said. "That’s being specifically designed to recruit indoor tournament activities like volleyball, basketball and soccer.”

Moving forward, John Mehner says there may be another announcement for a newer hotel coming soon.
