Woman charged with DUI after flipping car near Brookport Bridge

A Brookport, IL woman has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, as well as other charges, after she flipped her car near the Brookport bridge on Thursday.

At 8:36 p.m., deputies and EMS personnel were dispatched to an injury accident on US 45 at the Brookport Bridge.

The initial report was that a passenger car had crossed that guardrail of the bridge, but had actually occurred prior to the bridge in the sharp curve by the Smoke Shop on N. 8th Street.

It was determined that Jessica Whitaker, 32, of Brookport, IL, was traveling southbound, likely at a high rate of speed and reckless, prior to the accident.

As the car approached the sharp left hand curve, it drifted off the right side of the road and became sideways.

It then slid through the underbrush, narrowly missing several large trees and the guardrail.

The momentum of the vehicle caused it to continue to spin until it was traveling backwards.

It then collided with the dirt floodwall and came to rest on top of it.

Whitaker was taken Baptist Hospital for treatment of her injuries.

A citation was issued for several offenses including operating a motor vehicle under the influence, reckless driving, no registration plates, failure to wear seat belt..

Officials say alcohol and speed were the contributing factors to the accident.
