SIU rockets up 36 spots in college rankings

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

Southern Illinois University Carbondale comes in at 153 in the latest U.S. News & World Reports Best College Rankings.

Last year the school was listed at 189.

The 36 spot change is the biggest jump among the 10 Illinois schools listed in the top tier of the "National Universities" category.

According to SIU President Randy Dunn, "this improvement sends a strong message about the quality of our faculty and staff and their commitment to student success."

This news comes despite a 3.3 percent drop in enrollment for the fall semester of 2015.

Newly selected Interim Chancellor William Colwell says many of the problems SIU faces are common among modern institutions.

“Do we have shortcomings? Of course we do.” Explained Colwell on Thursday, “But, what I found out as far as trends, is the areas where we may need to grow are pretty much the areas where all other institutions of higher education are facing.”

After being selected by the SIU Board of Trustees on Thursday, Colwell will begin two years as Interim Chancellor on SIU’s Carbondale Campus on October 1st.
