After the latest round of bridge inspections in Missouri, the number of bridges in critical condition has risen to 641.

More than 120 of those are in southeast Missouri.

Critical condition bridges are the state’s worst bridges.

One of those bridges is located along Route PP in Scott County.

Missouri Department of Transportation engineers consider it a "critical condition bridge" for a number of reasons.

“Over the years the concrete that covers the reinforcing steel has eroded away,” said MoDOT District Bridge Engineer Ed Hess. “Heavy traffic and the salt chemicals are what play a major role in how a bridge acts over time.”

Bill Reinagell is one of the more than 800 drivers who pass over this 55-year-old bridge every day.

“Maybe 6, 7, 8 times a day,” he said.

Reinagell said it would be a big inconvenience if it were to close.

In Missouri, 641 bridges are listed as "critical."

The cost to replace all of these bridges would total more than $820 million.

“We would not leave a bridge considered to be unsafe open,” said Hess.

The bridges are "maintained" but not replaced.

Hess said MoDOT spends majority of the $6 million budget on bridges with satisfactory ratings.

“That way those bridges don’t get added to the list of poor serious bridges in the future,” he said.

MoDOT engineers say they should be replacing 100 bridges a year but can only afford to replace 30.
