Paducah's Dragon Boat Festival kicks off despite rain

FRANKFORT, KY (KFVS) -

Despite soggy weather, the Dragon Boat Festival went on in Paducah on Saturday.

The Kentucky Travel Industry Association named the event as one of their 2015 Fall Top Festivals & Events.

The annual Dragon Boat Festival on the Ohio River attracts more than 7,000 people for this one day event, filled with pageantry and excitement. 

Each boat measures 41 feet, carrying up to 20 paddlers, one drummer on the front and a professional steersman guiding the boat.

Dragon Boat Racing is an ancient Chinese sport dating back more than 2,500 years. Races are done in heats of three boats, each with the final third heat including the 15 fastest times of the day. Besides the races ancient Chinese traditions, food vendors and children's activities will be there as well.
