CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

While there are fewer new students on campus, Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s acting chancellor says there is an increase in student retention.

President Randy Dunn, who is serving as acting Chancellor, spoke about the enrollment numbers this afternoon. Dunn reported a total enrollment of 17,292, a decrease of 697 students from 2014.

Dunn said the smaller freshman class is due in part to a decision to focus on admitting fewer students who may not be ready for college based on their ACT scores and other factors.

Susan Ford, interim provost and vice chancellor for student affairs, cited several other things that contributed to the school’s lower overall enrollment. Ford said things like a decrease in international students and a greater focus on ensuring a return on the investment in recruitment and financial aid played a roll.

Dunn also said graduate enrollment is down slightly due in part to a delay in awarding graduate assistantships because of the state’s budget stalemate.
