Big Brothers Big Sisters program expands in southern IL counties

FRANKLIN COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

Centerstone, a facility that offers behavioral health services to individuals and families, had to send out notices earlier this summer to employees that their position may no longer be needed, due to no agreement on the Illinois state budget.

But one sponsored program of Centerstone is staying afloat and also expanding.

Big Brothers Big Sisters, a youth mentoring program has expanded to both Union and Williamson counties.

The program has also returned to Franklin County after it had to stop services back in 2009.

Big Brother Big Sisters is completely funded through donations and administrators say it’s great to see the program expand.

“It helps kids stay in school, be better in school, develop stronger and healthier relationships with the adults in their lives,” Director of Advancement for Centerstone of Illinois Kathryn Sime said. “The outside research has shown to be successful in helping kids develop the assets they need to avoid risky behavior, so enrolling a child as a little is a great way to build those skills and develop a foundation for success throughout their lives, so we’re just thrilled to be be able to do that.”

Perry, Jackson, Williamson, Union and Franklin Counties are among the five that have the Big Brothers Big Sisters program.

Administrators say they are currently looking for mentors. For more information, click here.  The program has had a 20 year history in southern Illinois.
