Meridian elementary to break ground on new addition

Meridian Community Unit School District 101 will be hosting a ground breaking ceremony on Tuesday, September 8 at 3 p.m. for its elementary school addition.

The $7 million addition will include classrooms, a gym and office space.

The old elementary school was condemned in October 2013 due to toxic mold that was found. Currently, modular classrooms have been set up to give more space to students and faculty.

The superintendent, Spencer Byrd, says this addition will not only benefit the students and faculty, but the community as well.

"You know this school here, we're a small community," Byrd said. "This school is really used for a lot of community events, so there's not only an excitement within the building with teachers and students, but it's also trickling out to the community, the parents, the school board. They're all very excited as well."

The project is being financed through an emergency grant from the Illinois Capital Development board.
