ADVANCE, MO (KFVS) -

The 55th Annual Advance Labor Day Picnic brought in an estimated 8,000 people to the small town Monday.

That is roughly six times the town's population of 1,300.

Organizers say this event is the only big event they have for the community each year. While many people come in from around the area and spend money at this event, organizers say it's not about the money. In fact, vendors aren't even charged a percentage of their sales to be there.

The Advance Ministerial Alliance took over the festival this year. Leaders say they want people to know it is about having fun, enjoying time with family and celebrating those in the workforce.

The festival was picked to be held on Labor Day to let people have an opportunity to relax and have fun as a thank you for their labor.

"We're so thankful for the American laborers, the people who get out and work everyday, they do what the have to do to keep this country strong and keep it moving forward," event organizer Brad Moore said. "This is a time of us being able to celebrate the day and being able to appreciate them and show them."

Children we talked with say it's a great way to let loose and not stress over everyday life. Children also say it's great to see so many people support their community. It's a social event as well.

"We get to see how many people do care and they actually support us and it's good to have fun and meet new people that we would never really talk to," Chloe Walk of Advance said.

The Labor Day Picnic kicked off Monday morning with a parade through town. Rides, fair food, a car show, pageants and more that lasted through Monday evening at Umfleet Park.
