DU QUOIN, IL (KFVS) -

Former Illinois Lieutenant Gov. Sheila Simon (D-Carbondale) announced she will run for state senate in southern Illinois' 58th District.

The Carbondale native made the announcement on Labor Day at the Du Quoin State Fair.

Simon says in a written statement that she'll "stand up for Southern Illinois' families and their jobs." The former teacher says she'll also campaign on the issue of funding for education.

"Right now it's distributed in a very uneven way -- the quality of the education you get often depends on the zip code and your address. I I don't think that's fair, I don't think most of us in Southern Illinois thinks that's fair," Simon said. "There are opportunities to make a better school funding system. I've been apart of that as lieutenant governor. I want to move towards moving that towards a law for the state of Illinois."

Simon says another important issue she wants to address is labor members' rights to organize.

Longtime Republican state Sen. David Luechtefeld has held the seat since 1995. Luechtefeld, the assistant minority leader since 2003, announced in June that he would not seek re-election in 2016.

Simon served as lieutenant governor from 2011 to 2015 with former Gov. Pat Quinn.

Simon made an unsuccessful bid for comptroller last November, losing to Republican Judy Baar Topinka, who died a month later.

Simon was an attorney at the Domestic Violence Clinic at Southern Illinois University from 1998-2000. She was also Prosecutor of Jackson County from 1994-1998. She was an attorney with the Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation.
