Southern Illinois man visits Du Quoin State Fair every year for 65 years

DU QUOIN, IL (KFVS) -

An Elkville, Illinois native has visited the Du Quoin State Fair every year since 1950 and has worked at the fair nearly 40 years.

Jerry Beard, 75, and a Du Quoin resident said he's gone to the state fair every year since he was about 10 years old.

The Du Quoin State Fair takes place 10 days each summer since 1921 and hundreds of thousands of people attend the Du Quoin State Fair each year.

“I’ve love this fair from the first time I ever come," Beard said. "And I don’t know how old I was when my mom and dad brought me up every year since.”

Beard a retired Illinois Department of Transportation worker, said he'd take two weeks off for vacation each year to work at the fair.

“I’m proud to be apart of it," Beard said.

Beard said he likes attending many of the free events at the fair.

“What I think makes it special is that you have a lot of free things," Beard said. "Once you pay to park everything’s free.”

The fair ends Monday, September 8.
