Poplar Bluff man runs marathon for children of St. Jude

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) -

There's many ways to give back to a charity, but an x-ray technologist from Poplar Bluff is choosing to use his feet.

Dale Manning is 66 years old and plans to run more than 600 miles, so he can raise $20,000 to give to the children of St. Jude.

This isn't Manning's first marathon, he ran from Memphis to Poplar Bluff in 2013 and raised more than $90,000 for charities.

This time, he plans to run 30 mile per day from Hartford, Michigan to the Poplar Bluff regional hospital in just 20 days.

He said his goal was always to do a marathon for the children of St. Jude because of how they inspired him.

“I want to do something for them because they fight for another day," Manning said. "Somebody said 'Well you’re kind of a hero,' I said 'No, I'm not' those children are heroes because they are the ones that are survivors. They don’t have a lot to look forward to, but you go in and ask them, 'How you doing?' they will smile and say, 'I’m doing fine!' but they don’t even know if they got tomorrow.”

He plans to start the run at 7 a.m. on Wednesday and the hospital is currently planning a victory celebration when he arrives.
