Paducah PD: Officer 'didn't see' pedestrian, hits him with cruiser

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) -

Police in Paducah have issued a correction concerning a pedestrian who was injured Thursday in an accident involving a police cruiser.

An initial press release said Capt. George Johnson was stopped on North 16th Street, waiting to turn left onto Broadway.

He said he saw William E. Berger, 56, standing on the corner. As he turned left, Berger stepped off the curb and into the left side of Johnson’s car.

A correction on Friday says Capt. Johnson now says a woman was on the corner next to him, and appeared to be waiting to cross the street. He waved for her to cross and she declined.

Johnson waited for a truck to pass on Broadway, then pulled from 16th Street and struck Berger with the front of his cruiser.

Johnson said he had not previously seen Berger and does not know which direction he came from.

Berger was taken to Baptist Health Paducah for treatment of possible injuries to his hip and leg.

According to a police report, there was minor damage to the left side of Johnson’s cruiser.
