More improvements could come to downtown Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Downtown Cape Girardeau got a makeover recently, now another part of downtown Cape may see improvements.

City officials, store owners and residents talked about what needs to be done at an open meeting on Thursday evening. City leaders say replacing the sidewalks is on the top of the to-do list.

The goal is to make more of downtown look more like Broadway Street where there are new sidewalks, better lighting, trees planted, and benches. City leaders hope to expand those improvements down to Water, Main, and Spanish Streets.

Tim Richmond with the City of Cape Girardeau Development Services Department said the meeting is one of the first steps in the planning process.

While downtown store owners like the idea and are in favor of improvements that will bring more people in their doors, there are also some concerns.

"[I hope there is] proper signage, allowing people to know that we are still open down here during the construction and [I hope they are] timely with the construction as well,” the owner of Threads, Kelli Seabaugh, said.

Another store owner said they hope the changes do not take away any street parking.

According to Richmond, the construction could begin as early as spring 2016. However, there are no estimates on cost yet because the project is in the early planning stages. Funding sources include casino revenue purposed for updates along the downtown/riverfront area and the Transportation Trust Fund.

There will be a second open meeting in the fall.
