Paducah, KY babysitter accused of giving infant anti-anxiety medication

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) -

A Paducah, Kentucky woman is accused of giving prescription medication to a child in her care.

April R. Burns, 31, was charged with second degree criminal abuse of a child and dispensing, prescribing or administering a controlled substance (first offense).

Police say they were called when the mother of a 5-month-old child brought the infant to a Paducah hospital late on Tuesday evening. They say the baby was lethargic and the mother was unable to fully wake her.

According to police, tests showed the baby had been given a benzodiazepine (anti-anxiety medication).

The baby was admitted to the hospital, but has been releases and is expected to fully recover.

Police say Burns was the child's babysitter and was watching the child on Monday while the mother was at work.

Burns was arrested just before noon on Thursday, Sept. 3 and booked into the McCracken County Regional Jail.
