Police: Passerby pulls driver from crashed vehicle just before it catches fire

RANDOLPH COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

A Dupo, Illinois man was seriously injured in a crash on Illinois Route 154 on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 2.

According to Illinois State Police, Michael D. Dillard, 21, was driving a 2002 Mazda Tribute eastbound on Illinois Route 154 at about .25 miles west of Randolph/Perry County Line Road when he failed to negotiate a curve.

Police say he left the right side of the road, hit some trees and then came to a rest in the trees.

They say Dillard was pulled from the vehicle by a passerby just before the vehicle caught on fire.

According to ISP, the cause was failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident/improper lane usage. They say charges are pending.

Dillard was taken from the scene by ambulance with serious injuries. Police say the ambulance was met en route to a Sparta hospital by a helicopter and he was airlifted to a St. Louis hospital.
