ILLINOIS (KFVS) -

The Department of Human Services office for Alexander County, located in Cairo, Ill., will be closing and merging with the office in Pulaski County.

According to a spokeswoman for the department, Veronica Vera, the Cairo office was experiencing a low number of clients, which was a factor that went into merging with the Pulaski County office, located in Mounds, Ill. The two offices are roughly 8 miles apart.

"It's a common sense decision," Vera said.

Vera said the state can save roughly $65,000 a year by closing the Cario office.

The Pulaski and Alexander offices went through a digital merger in 2013, meaning both are on the same electronic system.

Vera said both offices were already sharing administrative staff, with the same employees working at both offices.

At this point, she said no employees will lose their jobs with the closure of the Cairo office. She said they'll be transferred to the Mounds office.

Clients for DHS can access all DHS services online, over the phone, by mail and at any DHS office in the state.

Vera said you don't have to live in the county to access those services, another reason going into the closure.
